Rain and sleet stopped play for the annual Mold Pancake Races, which are held on Shrove Tuesday every year. Samantha Roberts, Mold Town Clerk said, “We are really disappointed to have to cancel the Pancake Races today. It is the first time in the eleven years that Mold Town Council and Cittaslow Mold have been organising the event, that the weather has been as wet and cold as this.
“The races are very popular with children and adults alike and there were 24 teams of children coming from Ysgol Bryn Coch, Ysgol Bryn Gwalia and Glanrafon, along with their class mates to cheer them on. I’m sure that they will be as disappointed as us.”
Twenty pancakes were already made and ready to toss by Spaven’s Sweet Shop, King Street, Mold, who were also kindly donating the prizes for both the fastest children’s and adults teams. Alan Spaven said, “There’s nothing we can do about the weather with an outdoor event like this and I understand why the decision had to be made to cancel the races. As a local business we do all we can to help support events and activities in Mold.”
Flintshire Disability Forum had teams ready to race and decided to hold a pancake party indoors instead, as members had been looking forward to the day.
