Mike Peters to Star in Urdd Opening Concert

Welsh rock star, Mike Peters, will be performing in Flintshire Urdd National Eisteddfod’s opening concert on Sunday evening, 29 May. He is currently on tour in the USA but will be returning to Wales in time for the concert.

A host of other stars originally from the area will be performing in the concert, including Broadway star Mark Evans, Britain’s Got Talent finalists Richard and Adam and popular comedian and singer, Caryl Parry Jones.

The family friendly event will be held 30 May – 4 June on the fields surrounding Flint High School, with the opening concert on the Sunday evening in the main pavilion.  This will be the first time that these stars have shared a stage, and joining them will be Côr Cytgan Clwyd, Ysgol Maes Garmon Choir, Castell Alun Jazz Band and the children and young people from the area that are in the Eisteddfod musicals.

Mike Peters, lead singer of the Alarm, said, “I’m delighted to be performing at the Urdd Eisteddfod Opening Ceremony.

I’m currently on tour in the USA and return to the UK later this month to embark on an extensive British Tour. I can’t think of a better way to finish the tour than coming home to Wales and performing with the talented Cor Cytgan on the Main Stage of the Urdd Eisteddfod in Flint.

The icing on the cake is that my sons, Dylan and Evan will both be in attendance. They both love singing, playing the guitar and piano and Dylan will be competing with Ysgol Glan Clwyd in the Eisteddfod so it will be a real family affair!”

Classical duo Richard and Adam’s latest album was number 1 in the Classical Charts for three weeks and Mark Evans will fly home from New York especially for the Eisteddfod. Caryl Parry Jones will be bringing some of her characters from popular S4C programme, Caryl a’r Lleill, to the stage as well as a new character created especially for the Eisteddfod, Fflint Eastwood.

Aled Sion, Director of the Eisteddfod, said, “It’s great that so many stars from the area will be performing in this spectacular opening concert.  Stars that have made their name internationally will share a stage with up-and-coming young performers from the area – a once-in-a-life time experience.  We are pleased to work in partnership with S4C to offer this amazing concert.

“As well as the opening concert, children and young people from the area will be performing two musicals during the Eisteddfod week – the primary children will perform ‘Fflamau Fflint’ (Flames of Flint) Tuesday evening in the pavilion and the young people from local secondary schools will be performing a Welsh version of ‘Hairspray’ on Saturday the 28th and Monday the 30th of May at St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School.”

Tickets for the opening concert and musicals are now available from the Eisteddfod website, urdd.cymru/eisteddfod or from the box office by ringing 0845 257 1639, for a discounted price before the 29th of April.  The concert will be filmed by Avanti Production Company and will be broadcast live on S4C.
